Welcome to the Indiana Toll Road (ITR). I want to take this opportunity to thank all of our patrons for choosing ITR. You have helped make the ITR truly the “Main Street of the Midwest” – a vital transportation corridor not just for the State of Indiana, but for the entire country!
In operation since 1956, the ITR stretches 157 miles across the northernmost part of Indiana from its border with Ohio to the Illinois State Line, where it provides the primary connection to the Chicago Skyway and downtown Chicago. The ITR links the largest cities on the Great Lakes with the Eastern Seaboard. The connections with I-65 and I-69 lead to major destinations in the South and on the Gulf Coast.
Prior to 2006, the ITR was operated by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). In 2005, Gov. Mitch Daniels’ proposal to lease the Toll Road was enacted into law by the Indiana General Assembly. The ITR Concession Company LLC (ITRCC) was awarded the project with a bid of $3.8 (US) billion for a term of 75 years. ITRCC formally assumed operations on June 29, 2006.
On Sept. 22, 2014, ITRCC announced it filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and that a sale process for the asset would commence. IFM Investors on March 11, 2015, announced that it had entered into a purchase and sale agreement for $5.725 billion for the right to operate the Indiana Toll Road and collect toll revenue. IFM inherits the remaining 66 years of the Concession Lease Agreement.
Since 2006, we have made a number of significant improvements to the ITR, including the expansion from two to three lanes in each direction in the Gary area, the implementation of electronic toll collection, and an extensive bridge capital improvement plan. And the best is yet to come!
Thank you for visiting the ITRCC website. Whether you are an experienced Toll Road traveler or a new customer, I think you’ll be excited about our plans for the future.
