Electronic Toll Collection is an automatic way to collect tolls through a device called transponder. ITR’s transponder is called E-ZPass. When you go through the lane the transponder is read and your account is debited with the toll amount.
What other electronic transponders are compatible with the E-ZPass lanes?
All IPASS and E-ZPass electronic transponders with valid accounts are accepted in E-ZPass lanes.
Will my IPASS work in Indiana? If so what toll rates will I pay?
Yes, IPASS is completely compatible on the Indiana Toll Road and all IPASS and E-ZPass customers pay the same low rate.
Did the toll rates increase?
Toll rates did increase for all cash paying customers as well as all 3 axles and higher.
Before you purchase an E-ZPass
I only use toll road a few times a year; is it worth it to get an E-ZPass® tag?
It can be, E-ZPass is the fastest way to use E-ZPass toll roads from Illinois to Maine For regular 2-axle passenger vehicles, E-ZPass® ETC saves money off the regular cash toll rate.
● Your valid 2-axle E-ZPass® tag will lock you into the E-ZPass® toll rates – in effect since 1985 – until 2016.
● Your account will not expire or go into an inactive state if you rarely use it but please remember there is a $1 a month per transponder, account maintenance fee.
● You can use your E-ZPass transponder in any of the other 14 (and growing) E-ZPass states, on more than 20 toll roads, and enjoy any applicable discounts that may be available.
How does the E-ZPass account pay my tolls? (Prepay only)
E-ZPass offers a pre-paid account for individuals. When you open an E-ZPass account, your payment, minus deposit or shipping if applicable, is placed in your E-ZPass account to pay your tolls each time you drive on a compatible toll road. When your account balance runs low, our E-ZPass system automatically replenishes your E-ZPass account from the form of payment you provided (approved credit card or checking account).
What happens the first three months of my account? After? (Prepay, 2-axle class only)
Normally when you open an account, usually $10 per E-ZPass, is placed in your account to pay your tolls. If you do not use up 75% of your opening balance prior to the first three full months of your account opening date, you will not be replenished during that period of time. If you do use more than 75% of your opening balance, your account will auto-replenish $10 per E-ZPass on the account until the three months have expired. Our system uses this initial three month time period to obtain an average of your monthly usage. After three months, your average monthly usage will replace the $10 amount our system used during the initial phase of your account. In any case, you only get replenished based on your actual toll usages and your remaining balance is continuously carried over to the next month.
Can I open an account without the automatic replenishment option?
No, the only option for pre-paid accounts is to have an accepted form of payment on file. Manually replenishing your E-ZPass account with cash, check or credit card is not available.
Where can I buy an E-ZPass?
There are many ways and locations to buy an E-ZPass. You can order online at www.ezpassin.com, call or stop by the E-ZPass Customer Care Center, pick one up on your next trip to a participating Northern Indiana CVS/pharmacy store or at any of the travel plazas on the Indiana Toll Road. Does my balance or account expire?
No. Your account will auto-replenish when it gets low, so even if you are an occasional user of the Indiana Toll Road, your E-ZPass account will not expire due to inactivity.
However, please be aware of the account fees outlined in these terms and conditions that may affect your balance.
Can I use E-ZPass in more than one vehicle?
Yes, although it is not recommended. As long as it is the same class vehicle, you can share the E-ZPass with other vehicles (maximum of 5 vehicles can share an E-ZPass). You must first register each vehicle to the E-ZPass account. To register vehicles you may login to your E-ZPass account. In the case of an unsuccessful toll transaction using the E-ZPass, an unregistered vehicle may be subject to toll violations and fines, and must pay the full cash toll fare.
How much do E-ZPass® tag(s) cost? (Prepay, 2-axle class only)
Personal 2 axle E-ZPass® tags are now an initial $25-$32 plus $1 per month (account maintenance fee) and $1 per month paper fee (if you would like a paper statement mailed to you every month) depending how the E-ZPass transponder is purchased, i.e. retail outlet or over the phone.
$10 ($8 retail) that you pay will be applied to your open balance of pre-paid tolls.
Stores are selling the E-ZPass for $25. Why would I only have a $8 E-ZPass balance? (Prepay, 2-axle class only)
To cover administrative costs related to selling E-ZPass transponders, retail outlets apply a $2 retail service fee. The Indiana Toll Road does not receive any portion of this fee and provides many alternatives for purchasing E-ZPass without this fee. All transponders require a $15 tag issuance fee. Please refer to the All About E-ZPass or the Questions & Answers above for more information.
Once I purchase my E-ZPass, when can I start to use it?
It can take up to five business days to receive your E-ZPass via UPS or US Mail. Once you receive the E-ZPass, or purchased at a retail outlet, you must follow the activation instructions included with your package. Once activated, it can take as little as one to three hours for all 21 Indiana Toll Road Toll Plaza lanes to receive the computer file containing your activation. It can take one to two days for all 12 I-PASS and E-ZPass toll states to receive the same activation. Until these time spans lapse, please use the cash lanes. You can install your E-ZPass as soon as you like and once your E-ZPass is accepted in a cash lane, you can start to use the E-ZPass only lanes if you like.
Understanding Your E-ZPass Account
Do I have to use a credit or debit card to replenish my account?
No. You can also pay by automatic withdrawal from a checking account (ACH/EFT). Please refer to the Questions and Answers above for more information. Do not send cash in the mail.
Can I add another vehicle to my account online?
Yes, this option is currently available. If you are sharing a transponder, you must register each vehicle to your E-ZPass account you may add vehicles online by accessing your E-ZPass account. A maximum of 5 vehicles may share an E-ZPass.
Why can't I view the individual transponder balances on my account?
If you have multiple E-ZPass transponders on your account, they share one account balance. You can still view individual transaction histories by transponder and monthly toll usage.
Why has my replenishment rate and low balance changed? (Prepay, 2-axle class only)
After 90 days of opening an E-ZPass account, both single and multiple transponder accounts replenish at a rate based on average monthly usage. Your account replenishment rate is based on the previous three months of usage on your account and is recalculated on the first of each month (minimum $10.) The minimum balance at which you replenish is 25% of your three-month average usage (minimum $2.50.)
Can I choose the replenishment amount on my E-ZPass account?
No. By default your replenishment will be set according to the average of your prior three months of toll charges. This will ensure you have enough funds every month and minimize the number of bank or credit card auto replenishments from your form of payment.
What credit cards do you accept for auto-replenishment?
Credit and debit cards are accepted for auto-replenish only. We currently accept MasterCard, VISA and American Express.
What functions do I have in my account online?
You can update your personal account and payment information, review current transactions and past statements and check your balance. From within your account you can also purchase additional E-ZPass transponders, report an E-ZPass lost or stolen and change your PIN, modify/delete or add additional vehicles to your E-ZPass account (you can purchase more E-ZPass(s).
Why did I receive a "low balance" lane sign notification? I thought my E-ZPass account was automatically replenished.
The “Low Balance” sign indicator is a courtesy for our customers. This sign means your E-ZPass account has just gone below the minimum account balance threshold and the form of payment associated with your E-ZPass account will be charged that night or next business night. This is the only indication your credit card or checking account will be debited when replenishing your E-ZPass account.
I received an "INVALID TAG" sign. I thought my account was automatically replenished, is there something wrong?
Yes, the “Invalid Tag” sign is an indication your E-ZPass account is at or below $0.00. This can happen if your replenishment was rejected by your bank, your E-ZPass was reported lost or stolen, your E-ZPass has not yet been activated or fully activated or your account was closed. If this occurred please call the E-ZPass Customer Care Center at (574) 675-4010 Monday – Thursday 8am – 5:30pm or Friday 8am-2pm EST for assistance. Please note, any rejection by your bank will incur a $25 rejected/declined fee applied to your E-ZPass account.
Why was I charged a $25 rejected/declined payment fee?
Whenever an E-ZPass account replenishment is declined or rejected for any reason by your bank, our system automatically applies the fee to your E-ZPass account to cover the bank fees and other E-ZPass account updates that must happen to bring your account back in good standing. It is the customers responsibility to keep the form of payment listed in the E-ZPass account in good standing, valid and active.
How do I know how much my checking account or credit card will be charged every month?
This amount is called the replenishment amount. This occurs when you have reached your “Low Balance” limit and see the “Low Balance” indicator in the toll lane. The amount is stated on the bottom left hand corner of your monthly E-ZPass statement. This amount can change monthly if your monthly toll average changes.
How do I close my account?
Via certified mail, send your transponder (wrapped in foil) with a letter requesting the E-ZPass account be closed. Your balance and deposit will be refunded within 30-90 days of receipt of the transponder and request. If you do not return the E-ZPass or it is in poor condition, you will forfeit your $10 deposit. An agent may contact you to arrange a form of refund.

Where can I use my E-ZPass?
You can use your E-ZPass on the Indiana Toll Road, Illinois Tollway, Ohio Turnpike, Chicago Skyway, and anywhere E-ZPass is accepted. Visit http://e-zpassiag.com/about-e-zpass/where-can-i-use-it for a listing of participating agencies and organizations.
*E-ZPass is not accepted at airports, parking lots and other non-roadway facilities that accept E-ZPass or E-ZPass Plus.
What should I do with my E-ZPass once I receive/purchase it?
Once you open the package verify all the information is correct. You do not have to sign anything or return any forms. These forms are for your records. Retail purchasers must Read the terms and conditions, once you register or activate an E-ZPass, and you then decide you do not agree with the terms as stated, it can take up to 90 days to refund your account balance. Save the metallic bag the E-ZPass was shipped in, you may need this in the future. This bag can be used to ship or store your E-ZPass when you do not want it to be read in toll lanes. Do I have to stop at all tollbooth lanes in Indiana if I.m using E-ZPass?
Yes. All traffic must obey the posted stop signs/lights in these lanes. All lanes are gated so please drive cautiously.
If I use a manned tollbooth lane with my E-ZPass, do I pay the cash price?
No. You pay the E-ZPass price whenever you use your activated and valid E-ZPass on the Indiana Toll Road. Please make sure to keep a positive E-ZPass balance by keeping your form of payment valid and up-to-date and mounting your E-ZPass correctly. However, if your E-ZPass does not read due to improper usage or installation you will have to pay the full cash toll amount.
Can I use my E-ZPass in multiple vehicles? In a rental car?
You can however it is not advisable due to transponder installation issues. You must register any vehicle using the transponder to the E-ZPass account. In the case of an unsuccessful toll transaction using the E-ZPass, an unregistered vehicle may be subject to toll violations and fines on other toll roads and the driver will have to pay the full cash toll rate on the Indiana Toll Road. This can only be done with a live agent by calling (574) 675-4010 Monday – Thursday 8am – 5:30pm or Friday 8am-2pm EST for assistance.
What happens if I forget my transponder and accidentally use the E-ZPass lanes? Can I pay the missed toll online?
Don’t forget your E-ZPass! Since multiple E-ZPasss on one account share the full account balance, there is no true benefit to using one E-ZPass for multiple vehicles. If you do forget your E-ZPass, you will have to wait for a toll attendant for assistance and pay the full cash toll rate. Do not back up. Online payment for missed tolls is not yet available. You may pay missed tolls over the phone by calling (574) 675-4010 Monday – Thursday 8am – 5:30pm or Friday 8am-2pm EST or by mailing in a copy of your missed toll receipt along with a check made out to ITR Concession Company LLC. The address is on the receipt. You must pay the full cash toll rate, it is not possible to apply missed cash tolls to E-ZPass accounts.
Can I use my regular E-ZPass when I occasionally tow a trailer or drive an R.V?
Yes. Our E-ZPass technology will automatically calculate and deduct the proper toll. You do not need to use the cash lanes or purchase a special transponder. You must register all vehicles to the E-ZPass account.
Can I use E-ZPass on a motorcycle?
Yes. However, there are no recommended installation locations and we can not guarantee the functionality.
I received a "Low Balance" indication in a toll lane. I thought my account was automatically replenished, is there something wrong?
No. Everything worked as planned and as long as you do not see this sign for more than one business day then your account is in good standing. When E-ZPass accounts go below the minimum balance amount, our system will show the “Low Balance” sign as a courtesy to our customers. The E-ZPass account will collect from the form of payment on file over night and if the bank approved the transaction, the E-ZPass account will be fully replenished that next business day. The “Low Balance” sign is the only indication your E-ZPass account will be replenished with the authorized form of payment listed in your E-ZPass account.

Your E-ZPass Transponder
Why do I have to mount my transponder on my windshield?
This is mandatory for your safety and to ensure a successful toll transaction. Before the transaction takes place, the transponder is activated on the approach to the plaza. Waiting until the last minute to find your transponder or holding it in your window interferes with the transaction. A properly mounted E-ZPass, IPASS and E-ZPass will function more than 99% of the time. Not mounting, incorrectly mounting or holding the E-ZPass WILL severally reduce its functionality or completely disable it.

How do I know if my transponder is working?
A: Please note the indicator signs near the gate on the left side of the toll booth lane. Your E-ZPass worked correctly if the indicator sign stated:
- “E-ZPass accepted”
- “Low Balance”
- “Invalid Tag”
If “Invalid Tag” was indicated then you must call (574) 675-4010 (Indiana E-ZPass account-holders only) because there is an issue with your account, such as no funds. Other IPASS and E-ZPass customers must contact their home agency. Any other signal indication or lack thereof means your E-ZPass was not read. A toll attendant will need to assist you to allow passage. Please call the E-ZPass Customer Care Center for correct installation location for your particular vehicle. A properly mounted E-ZPass, IPASS and E-ZPass will function more than 99% of the time for five to 10 years. Not mounting, incorrectly mounting or holding the E-ZPass will reduce its function or completely disable it.
What do I do if my transponder is not working?
A: There is a non-user replaceable battery in the E-ZPass transponder. It is designed to last at least five years. The primary reason for an E-ZPass to not work properly is incorrect usage or installation. E-ZPasss MUST be installed correctly to function. If the E-ZPass Customer Care Center concludes your E-ZPass has malfunctioned you will need to swap your transponder for a new unit. This exchange can be done in person or by mail. Please refer to the Customer Service section of this website for locations and hours. To exchange your transponder by certified mail, wrap it in foil and send it with a letter requesting an exchange to the address below. A new unit will be shipped upon receipt of your old transponder.

Can I use my E-ZPass on other toll roads?
You can use your E-ZPass on any toll road that accepts E-ZPass or IPASS. Please refer to http://e-zpassiag.com/about-e-zpass/where-can-i-use-it for a listing.
Do I have to do anything to use my E-ZPass on other toll roads?
As long as your E-ZPass is activated and installed at least 24 hours prior to your out-of-state travels then you do not have to anything, just enjoy you trip!
Do I get a discounted toll fare on other toll roads?

What do I do if my E-ZPass was charged incorrectly on another toll road?
Please call (574) 675-4010 and we will dispute your charge with the other toll road on your behalf. Other toll roads never have access to your E-ZPass account and are unable to refund or credit your E-ZPass account.

Do I have to register my E-ZPass with the Indiana Toll Road to use it or receive the lower toll rate for 2-axle vehicles?
No. All E-ZPass transponders are accepted on the Indiana Toll road. As long as it belongs to a valid account and is installed properly there is nothing further to do.
All 2-axle vehicles with compatible (E-ZPass transponders) are accepted and eligible for the lowest toll rate.
What lanes do I use on the Indiana Toll Road if I have an E-ZPass?
All Indiana Toll Road toll lanes will accept your valid and properly installed IPASS or E-ZPass transponder. Many plazas will have dedicated E-ZPass only lanes for your convenience. All lanes are gated however, so please wait for the signal indicator (“E-ZPass accepted” or “Low Balance”) gate to open before proceeding through the toll lane.
Do I still have to grab a ticket when entering the Indiana Toll Road?
Tickets are issued to all cash customers or to any customer whose transponder was not read. Please proceed to take the ticket and present it to a toll collector when you exit. The toll collector can reproduce your entry point and charge your transponder the correct toll charge at that time. Please check your account to verify this transaction. If the transaction is incorrect, then call your E-ZPass agency to dispute the transaction. Your agency will contact E-ZPass on your behalf.
My E-ZPass account was charged incorrectly for a toll charge in Indiana. What do I do?
If you believe a transaction on the Indiana Toll Road is incorrect, call your E-ZPass agency to dispute the transaction. Your agency will contact E-ZPass on your behalf. The Indiana Toll Road does not have access to other agency account holders.
I have an E-ZPass and my device did not work, why do I have to pay cash? How do I get a refund?
The primary reason for an E-ZPass device to fail is incorrect installation. Please make sure your transponder is installed according to the instructions provided by your home agency. Call your home agency for more information on proper installation locations. The second most common reason for transponders to fail is due to account status. In this case contact your home agency as soon as possible. In any case, it takes up to 24 hours for the status of your transponder to reach every toll road, so a valid account at a home agency does not necessarily mean it is valid in all other toll roads at the same time. If you feel you have followed all the guidelines for correct installation and your account was in good standing, you must contact the E-ZPass Customer Care Center as soon as possible. Please be prepared with as much detail of the event, time, date, locations and amount you paid. A receipt of the transaction will speed up the resolution greatly so if you have the receipt please send in a copy after you have spoken to an E-ZPass agent.
